English renderings
Of the night; nocturnal

Meaning

The adjective describes Hekate, Aphrodite, Dionysos, the Moirai, and the Erinyes or Eumenides; it also qualifies Iakchos’s dances at XLIX.3. Thus it can mark a divine association or the time of an activity, not one fixed ritual office. At LIX.17 the verse’s νυκτέριαι must be kept separate from the apparatus’s marked νυκτέριοι and reported ἀέριοι.
