English renderings
aerial; misty; of the air

Meaning

The adjective follows its setting. Clouds, breezes, and airy nourishment belong to an atmospheric description; Hera’s rushing noises have an aerial setting; Melinoe’s apparitions are misty or aerial in character. The Fates and Erinyes can also be airy and unseen. These uses do not establish one material constitution for every divine referent. In LIX the apparatus redistributes airy and nocturnal epithets between lines; it does not simply add or remove one quality from the whole hymn.
