English renderings
Adonis

Meaning

Adonis is named in the Prayer, in Aphrodite’s hymn and in his own hymn. At LVI.4 “maiden and youth” addresses him in paired feminine and masculine terms, while the seasonal flourishing nearby gives his appearance a recurring rhythm. These are local features of the hymn’s address, more informative here than replacing the name with a general account of his mythology.
