Ship

Meaning

Ships need preserved courses, rescue from storms, and favourable winds in the Poseidon, sea-goddess, Leukothea, Palaimon, and Zephyr hymns. The language alternates between a good-running course and an unsteady sea-going rush, making travel’s uncertainty concrete. Ionic νηυσί and νηῶν belong to ναῦς; the similar νηῷ at XLII.5 means a temple and must not be included here.
