Meaning

The Mother grants mortals good gifts, while the Moirai and Charites at XLIII.7–9 act to please Zeus and the fruit-giving mother, naturally understood as Phersephone’s mother rather than the Horai’s Themis. Perfect participles describe acceptable offerings or deities favourably disposed toward initiates and reverent acts. Giving, pleasing and gracious disposition are connected but not identical constructions. At LII.13 and LXXIX.11 the apparatus contrasts κεχαρισμένος forms with forms from χαίρω, shifting graciousness toward rejoicing.
