Female impeller; one who spurs on

Meaning

Athena is ὁρμήτειρα at XXXII.9, immediately qualified as goad-loving towards the wicked but prudence for the good. The contrast directs her impelling force according to its recipient. The edition prints ὁρμήτειρα against ὁρμάστειρα; lexical access through the latter should not silently replace Abel’s adopted formation.
