Meaning
Ἐσθλός marks something as good, noble or beneficial. The noun it qualifies determines the kind of approval. The hymns use it for a course, glory, intention, life, divine thought and especially an end or outcome; the adjective is not a technical name for one particular promised condition.
Use in the book
The recurring τέλος ἐσθλόν asks for a good completion of life or undertakings. Proteus, Hermes, Nike and Asklepios receive such petitions (XXV.11; XXVIII.11; XXXIII.9; LXVII.8). Dikaiosyne’s hymn says wisdom reaches the good end of excellence (LXIII.11), then asks for a good life moving in even balances (LXIII.13). Completion and continuing life are both valued, so good end should not automatically be reduced either to death or to a specific afterlife destiny.
The Stars complete a good course for works of repute (VII.13), and Nike holds noble glory of contest (XXXIII.6). In ethical contexts the word qualifies good intentions (LXII.10) and the gods’ benevolent mind (LXXXVI.7). Finally, the Death hymn asks that old age be a good prize (LXXXVII.12). That concrete wish helps keep the language of goodness connected to human wellbeing rather than an exclusively initiatory abstraction.

Translation
The edition’s good and noble are contextual renderings, not separate categories. At VII.13 the adopted singular ἐσθλόν qualifies course against reported plural ἐσθλοί, which would alter agreement. At LXIII.11 adopted ἐσθλόν is likewise an editorial choice against reported ὅλλον. The printed phrases remain the basis for the local reading.
