English renderings
be, exist

Meaning

Proteus knows what is, what was and what will be (XXV.4–5), where the verb organizes time. Elsewhere it identifies cosmic regions as Pan’s limbs (XI.3), predicates everything of Nature (X.28), or connects a deity with being a helper (II.13; LXXIV.8). In LV.4 the origin of all things from Aphrodite is expressed by ἐκ σέθεν as well as the verb. These different constructions should not be reduced to a single doctrine of Being.
