Meaning

After tearing the heavenly covering, Zeus releases the gleaming thunderbolt at XIX.17. The bolt is the object of ἀφίεις; the preceding covering belongs to the tearing construction. The apparatus reports προκάλυμμα βάλλεις against the printed προκάλυμμ’ ἀφίεις, so care over the joined line is necessary to avoid making the covering the thing released.
