English renderings
distress; grief; pain

Meaning

ἀνία covers childbirth pangs, Antaia’s wandering grief in her search, and the sorrow of harsh disease. The body and its emotional burden remain closely connected without becoming a single cosmic “necessity.” At II.4 the edition adopts παροῦσ’ ἀνίαις against παροῦσα νέαις; at II.11 both readings retain the pains, while differing in how their relief is described.
