Meaning
A symbol makes something beyond immediate appearance perceptible through a figure or image. Guérin's most explicit formulation calls the universe a moving array of symbols, images of the uncreated placed in motion by God.
Use in the book
The December 1834 shepherd passage is not a dictionary definition of symbolism, but a compact account of how a human figure can stand within a meaningful universe. In a painting the solitary person represents intelligence: the world sounds, and he echoes; its images travel, and he mirrors them. Symbolic reception is therefore not restricted to deciphering a fixed visual code. It is mobile, acoustic as well as optical, and bound to attention.
The phrase “images of the uncreated” requires care. The images are encountered within creation, while what they disclose is not reducible to that visible field. Guérin does not explain a hierarchy of signs or give a rule for translating each natural object into one meaning. Elsewhere a luminous sign can be an alluring, possibly deceptive guide pursued by thought. Symbolic attraction and reliable knowledge are not synonymous.
The ending about the real shepherd and narrator prevents the elevated account from hardening into an unqualified self-description. Their ordinary acts remain instinctive pastimes. The paragraph stages the distance between a cultural image of contemplative humanity and the modest persons through whom it is imagined. Symbol is consequently a local, powerful word for the world's suggestiveness, but not evidence of a finished symbolic system.

- 15 March 1833 · ¶1The earlier contrast between exterior form and inward language supplies a related account of natural meaning.
Translation in this edition
The supplied English renders “flottant appareil de symboles” as “floating array of symbols.” “Appareil” suggests an organized display or ensemble here, not a mechanical apparatus. “The uncreated” preserves the French substantive “l'incréé.”
Source note
“Symboles” occurs in this concentrated December paragraph. Its interpretive importance is greater than its frequency, but the local evidence does not establish a systematic theory of symbolism.

Meaning
A symbol in these notes is a perceptible form through which a larger depth becomes available. The ordinary scene does not need to disappear in order to signify. It becomes the Symbol of life's depth precisely as something seen before the eyes, under particular conditions of the soul.
The capitalized singular should not be mistaken for a ready-made decoding system. The fragment does not assign one permanent meaning to every object. Elsewhere symbols belong to sacrifice and the vow as forms of exchange. The word names a relation and an operation before it names a catalogue of emblems.
Use in the book
Fusées XVII locates the disclosure in ‘certain almost supernatural states’. Both certain and almost restrict the claim. A spectacle, however ordinary, may reveal the whole depth of life, and ‘it’ becomes its Symbol. The ordinariness matters: significance need not depend on rare scenery or a supernatural event. The altered relation between state and scene is enough.
This can be read beside the ship of Fusées XXII, whose real components generate an imagined living totality. That paragraph makes the stages of the poetic operation visible rather than simply announcing a hidden meaning. The tragic sky in Fusées VII is another useful comparison, although it is named as a transfer of epithet rather than as a symbol. Different figures can deepen perception without belonging to one undifferentiated theory.
Fusées XVII also calls sacrifice and the vow supreme formulas and symbols of exchange. In that case an act concentrates a relation of giving and return. The connection to the visual scene lies in condensation: something limited carries a wider structure. But no uniform doctrine is elaborated. The notebook invites readers to connect these moments while leaving room for differences between a ritual sign, a poetic image and a privately intensified perception.

Translation in this edition
The 2026 edition expands the compact ‘Il en devient le Symbole’ into ‘The scene becomes the Symbol of that depth of life’. This is an explanatory resolution of the French pronouns, not an additional sentence by Baudelaire. It makes a plausible relation explicit while reducing the original's compression. Capitalized ‘Symbol’ is preserved. The expansion is helpful, provided readers remember that the French itself lets the pronouns bind spectacle and depth more tightly and less discursively.
