Meaning
Esoteric, occult, secret, and arcane indicate hidden or restricted knowledge. Here they also distinguish an inner interpretation from the outer explanations the author attributes to ordinary science or religion.
Use in the book
The opening pages describe a guarded wisdom available to a prepared minority. I says that written teaching was veiled in alchemy and astrology. III makes inner and outer knowledge corresponding levels of several disciplines.
VIII intensifies the restriction at higher planes, claiming that some teachings are too difficult or dangerous for general dissemination. XIV nevertheless presents this public book as the key through which other occult writings can be understood.

In this edition
The historical terms are preserved. Occult is not silently made a synonym for false, nor is esoteric treated as a guarantee of truth.
Reading the argument
Restriction explains the book's rhetoric of readiness, but it also limits independent inspection of its claims. A hidden source cannot be verified solely by the assertion that only the properly prepared can recognize it. That evidential issue is distinct from the role secrecy plays in the narrative.

Use in the book
The book distinguishes public moral lessons from an inward doctrine disclosed to prepared students. It applies that division to ancient priesthoods, Christianity, and Masonry. The visible ceremony can still teach something valuable even where its fuller significance is not understood.

In this edition
Inner and outer are broad forms; not every occurrence is a technical classification of teaching. Their locations are supplied without assigning one sense to all of them.
Reading the argument
The distinction is not simply false versus true. It also creates a structure of authority: someone must judge readiness and decide what to disclose. The rules make that judgment part of the order's admission and governance.
