Meaning
Continuity is persistence through change; descent is a claim that a later body derives from an earlier one. Shared ideas and uninterrupted organization are not the same relationship.
Use in the book
The book explains changed names, hidden instruction, survivors, manuscripts, and recurring symbols as links in a long spiritual history. Several quoted passages nevertheless distinguish an ancient philosophy from a recent institution or allow similar forms to arise independently. The compilation preserves those alternatives.

In this edition
The entry groups an argument rather than a single attested phrase. Origin, continuation, and succession are reported separately as lexical forms.
Reading the argument
For each link, ask what is being transmitted, by whom, and through what evidence. Similarity may support comparison, but inheritance, borrowing, independent development, and later interpretation remain different explanations of it.
