Meaning
Themis is a divine name whose forms include Θέμιν, Θέμιδος, and the epic genitive Θέμιστος. The local presentation connects the goddess with authoritative sacred order. Related verbs and nouns help express that activity, but a name should not be replaced everywhere by the abstract English “law.”
Use in the book
The Prayer names Themis as an observer or interpreter of sacred things for human beings. Her own hymn develops this role through Delphi: she first reveals the oracle, gives divine judgments, and teaches Phoebus θεμιστοσύναι. It then connects her with the first revelation of holy rites, Bacchic nights, divine honours, and mysteries. The movement joins oracular authority and ritual ordering within one hymn; it does not require a reconstructed historical transfer between real institutions.
Other contexts supply relationships rather than an account of her whole activity. At XLIII.1 she and Zeus are parents of the Hours, including Eunomia, Dike, and Eirene. Appended Ares calls the war-god her helper. This matters especially beside its later prayer for courage within peaceful ordinances: association with Themis is not simply praise of uncontrolled martial violence. Across the passages, her name provides a personal centre for order that can govern divine communication, shared rites, and human conduct.
Places to read
- Prayer to Musaeus · Line 23Themis is named through a sacred interpretive function.
- Hymn LXXIX · Line 1The dedicated hymn identifies her through both name and parentage.
- Hymn XLIII · Line 1Her parentage of the Hours links her with ordered time and social goods.
- Hymn LXXXVIII · Line 4The appended hymn places Ares in a helping relation to Themis.
Translation
The English transliteration should keep the named goddess visible even when related θεμιστ- words are translated with judgment or ordinance language. The different genitives Θέμιδος and Θέμιστος do not designate different recipients. The dedicated hymn’s claims of first revelation are its own praises, not independently established chronology.
