English renderings
shoot, offspring

Meaning

The noun carries plant growth into descriptions of divine origin. Aither is a shining growth (V.5); Herakles is Earth’s finest growth (XII.9), while Kronos is offspring of Earth and starry Heaven (XIII.6). Themis, Earth’s young shoot and bud-faced maiden (LXXIX.2), makes the vegetal imagery especially vivid. These different relationships should not be collapsed into one genealogy.
