Meaning
Proteus is πρωτογενής as the revealer of the beginnings of all nature (XXV.2). The epithet places him in an originating position. It is related to πρωτογένεια and πρωτόγονος but should remain a distinct Greek formation, not be merged with the proper name Protogonos.
