Meaning
αὐτοφυής describes something growing or arising of itself. It presents origin as belonging to the being’s own nature or power, but does not necessarily cancel every other expression of parentage or emergence in the surrounding hymn. The two local uses make that qualification especially important.
Use in the book
Helios is self-grown, unwearying and a sweet sight to living beings at VIII.3. The combination places independent emergence beside continuing activity and visibility. The line does not recount a birth-event or specify how self-origin should be reconciled with every other divine family relation.
Herakles is likewise self-grown and unwearying at XII.9, yet in the same line is Earth’s most excellent shoot. The plant-image supplies an origin relation that coexists with self-growth. Removing either half would make the text simpler at the cost of its actual language. The epithet can praise inherent vitality or self-arising power while the shoot-image connects the god with Earth.

Translation
“Self-born” can be a helpful English cue but may imply a more exclusive genealogical claim than “self-grown.” The source’s local pairing with βλάστημα should govern interpretation. Nature’s αὐτοπάτωρ, “self-fathering,” is a related but different formulation and is not counted as another occurrence of αὐτοφυής.
