English renderings
female saviour or preserver

Meaning

The feminine agent noun accompanies requests concerning childbirth, rescue, release and protection. Prothyraia is a saviour in the childbirth hymn (II.3,14); Leukothea receives the same title amid waves and sea danger (LXXIV.4). Rhea, the Mother and Artemis extend the term to other divine protectors. Keep the feminine noun distinct from the verb σῴζω and the adjective σωτήριος, even when English renders all three with saving language.
