English renderings
nurse or nourisher

Meaning

The noun can name male or female nourishers and even a place. Hera nourishes winds, the Nymphs nurse Bacchos, Hippa and Silenos each receive the nursing title, and Cyprus is Aphrodite's nurturing place (LV.24). Nature, the Mother and Adonis are praised as nourishers of all in their own hymns. These shared roles do not erase the different agents; vocative τροφέ is from τροφός, not from τροφεύς.
