old age

Meaning

Persephone is asked for a fortunate life leading to comfortable old age (XXIX.19). The Death hymn likewise seeks to make old age a good reward (LXXXVII.12), where γῆρας is placed beside γέρας, prize. The distinction matters: the petition values a favourable form of ageing rather than treating all old age as automatically blessed.
