English renderings
Kypris; the Cyprian Aphrodite

Meaning

Kypris is the goddess whose mother is the sea at XXII.7, whose sweet shoot is Adonis at LVI.8, and whose desire offers Ares an alternative to fighting at LXV.7. III.2 is more surprising: the speaker proposes also to call Night Kypris. That explicit act of naming belongs to Night’s generative description, not to a rule that every occurrence of either name is interchangeable.
