English renderings
messenger; herald

Meaning

Hermes is explicitly Zeus’s messenger at XXVIII.1; Dream is the messenger of things to come at LXXXVI.2. The noun thus covers personal service and the disclosure of future events. Prayer.22 invokes the messenger of the heavenly gods without supplying a personal name there, so the noun alone should not be translated “Hermes.”
