Meaning

Jesus is the historical and scriptural teacher invoked throughout the book. Christ and Christos can also name the inward divine perfection Clymer regards as a human possibility.

Use in the book

The introduction separates Jesus’s teaching of brotherhood from later theological formulations and objects to restricting spiritual consummation to Jesus alone. Comparative passages place the Christ story beside other dramas of death and renewed life. The Foundations division also uses Jesus in a narrative of secret teaching and apostolic transmission. These uses serve related theological aims but do not supply equal historical evidence.

Reading the argument

The distinction between a named person and an inward principle is central to reading the book fairly. At the same time, the source’s claims about Jesus’s movements, associates, and institutional successors should not be accepted merely because they support that distinction.

Luke 8:1–3 names women, including Mary Magdalene, among those accompanying Jesus, and John 19:25 places women at the cross. These passages complicate the introduction’s assertion that Mary could not have accompanied him on his journeys.14
