Meaning

Christos is the spiritual perfection or divine capacity interpreted within humanity. In this usage it can name an inward realization rather than only a historical individual.

Use in the book

The introduction relates Christos to a perfected humanity and compares that state with Buddha. The Hiram discussion makes the candidate personify an initiatory drama, then interprets the Christ-state as a potential within the soul. An original note also connects the indwelling Christ with alchemical fire and Mercury.

In this edition

Christos is not normalized to Jesus. Christ is a broader form and may have historical, devotional, or inward meanings in context.

Reading the argument

The symbolic use should be attributed to the writers quoted. It does not make every reference to Jesus a technical description of a universal state, or establish that every Christian or Buddhist community explains its teaching in these terms.
