English renderings
Goad; overpowering frenzy

Meaning

Pan is asked to send Panic οἶστρος away, and Meilinoe to expel the soul’s οἶστρος to the earth’s ends. The Eumenides loosen limbs with it at LXX.9. The goad-image conveys coercive, frightening excitation; in these passages the response is relief from its power rather than a celebration of every kind of frenzy.
