understanding or prudence

Meaning

Athena is understanding for the good, in contrast to frenzy for the bad at XXXII.9. The moral opposition is explicit and gives the noun its local force. A later technical philosophical definition is unnecessary to explain the contrast and should not be presumed from the word alone.
