Mighty in spirit; vehement

Meaning

Ares, Herakles, Rheia, Zeus, Plouton, Athena, and Hephaistos receive ὀβριμόθυμος, so the compound crosses gender and divine sphere. At XIX.6 it is transferred to the storm weapons themselves, describing forceful impact rather than a literal human-like psyche inside a bolt. The apparatus repeatedly reports spellings with ὀμβριμο-; these are not independent rain-epithets to be inferred from resemblance to ὄμβρος.
