English renderings
of lightning; lightning-bearing

Meaning

Zeus receives this lightning epithet in direct address, in his lightning hymn and in Semele’s birth narrative. The last context is especially consequential: at XLIV.5 the apparatus attributes ἀστραπίοιο to Wiel against ἀθανάτου, replacing “immortal” with “of lightning.” The printed adjective should retain that electrical force rather than becoming generic brilliance.
