stirring war

Meaning

Rhea, Athena and Ares are each described as war-stirring. The active sense fits the martial force of the addresses, including printed πολεμόκλονος for Athena (XXXII.2). At XXXII.2 the verse prints πολεμόκλονος, while the apparatus’s adopted-side lemma is πολεμοκλόνος (sic), with reported πολεμόκλονε (-οκλόνε). This inspectable accent contrast is not by itself a sufficient reason to reverse the local meaning into “shaken by war.”
