Meaning
Diagramma is a figure or diagram; systēma a structured system; systasis a combination or constitution; homologia agreement; and desmos a bond. Anaphainesthai is to come to light or become manifest. These are distinct ways of naming organized plurality. Their juxtaposition lets the Athenian state a unity of studies without replacing all their objects by one undifferentiated substance.
Use in the book
The culminating prescription gathers every diagram, every numerical system, every combination of harmony, and the agreement of the stars' revolution (991e). All must come to light as one to the person learning in the right way. The repeated comprehensive expressions forbid treating mastery of a single isolated specialty as the full wisdom described here.
The condition is methodological: one must learn while looking toward one. The reason offered is that one bond naturally belonging to all these will become manifest to those who think (991e–992a2). “By nature” makes the unity more than an arbitrary arrangement invented by the teacher. Yet the passage does not name the bond by a single technical formula or demonstrate each relation in turn. Number, proportion, and orderly motion provide the surrounding clues; identifying the bond exclusively as one modern mathematical structure would exceed the wording.
The bond also does not eliminate each study's distinctive objects. A diagram is not simply a musical interval, and a celestial revolution is not literally a geometrical drawing. The point is to understand relationships that make them mutually illuminating. The immediate preceding demand to bring particulars to forms and test inadequate statements prevents a merely decorative assertion that “everything is connected” from satisfying the requirement.
The consequences are substantial. Handling the studies otherwise leaves one dependent on fortune; no nature in cities will become happy without them; this is the way, nourishment, and learning one must pursue (992a). The expression is programmatically demanding. The text's confidence about the necessity of the route should not be confused with a displayed proof that every possible form of human happiness has been eliminated.
The learner's unity of understanding also prepares the final hope that the properly formed person becomes one out of many after death. The educational and eschatological unities echo each other, but the account does not identify them as the same event. The bond of sciences concerns how understanding is achieved now; the final condition concerns the wise person's hoped-for portion beyond death.

Translation in this edition
“System,” “combination,” “agreement,” and “bond” keep systēma, systasis, homologia, and desmos distinguishable. The agreement here is structural, whereas agreement between speakers is another application of the same word-family. “Come to light” gives anaphainesthai its force and is kept apart from ordinary “appear.”
Coherence of celestial revolution — ὁμολογία (homologia)
ὁμολογία (homologia)
Coherence of celestial revolution. The agreement of the stars' revolution contributes to the unity of studies; this local sense is structural rather than an interlocutor's assent. Attested: ὁμολογίαν (991e). The synoptic bond of the studies.
Effect of right learning — ὄφελος (ophelos)
ὄφελος (ophelos)
Effect of right learning. The studies yield great benefit only to the learner who takes them over in the right way. Attested: ὄφελος (991d). The synoptic bond of the studies.
Natural unity of studies — δεσμός (desmos)
δεσμός (desmos)
Natural unity of studies. A single natural bond joins diagrams, number, harmony, and celestial motion; the passage does not name it through a unique modern mathematical formula. Attested: δεσμὸς (991e–992a2). The synoptic bond of the studies.
Constitution of harmony — σύστασις (systasis)
σύστασις (systasis)
Constitution of harmony. Every harmonic combination joins the other studies in the synthesis; the same noun's earlier soul-body combination has a different local object. Attested: σύστασιν (991e). The synoptic bond of the studies.
Disclosure through right learning — ἀναφαίνεσθαι (anaphainesthai)
ἀναφαίνεσθαι (anaphainesthai)
Disclosure through right learning. The unity and natural bond of the studies become manifest to thinkers who learn while looking toward one. Attested: ἀναφανῆναι; ἀναφανήσεται (991e–992a2). The synoptic bond of the studies.
Geometrical object in the synthesis — διάγραμμα (diagramma)
διάγραμμα (diagramma)
Geometrical object in the synthesis. Every diagram belongs among the studies to be understood through one natural bond, rather than as an isolated drawing. Attested: διάγραμμα (991e). The synoptic bond of the studies.
Fallback when method fails — τύχη (tychē)
τύχη (tychē)
Fallback when method fails. Handling the studies otherwise than through their bond leaves one calling on fortune, in contrast to the specified educational route. Attested: τύχην (992a). The synoptic bond of the studies.
Beneficial taking-over of studies — παραλαμβάνειν (paralambanein)
παραλαμβάνειν (paralambanein)
Beneficial taking-over of studies. The learner receives great benefit only when the subjects are taken over in the right way. Attested: παραλαμβάνοντι (991d). The synoptic bond of the studies.
Celestial turning in the synthesis — περιφορά (periphora)
περιφορά (periphora)
Celestial turning in the synthesis. The stars' revolution is included through its agreement with the mathematical and harmonic order. Attested: περιφορᾶς (991e). The synoptic bond of the studies.
Ordered number — σύστημα (systēma)
σύστημα (systēma)
Ordered number. The system of number is one differentiated structure integrated with diagrams, harmony, and celestial revolution. Attested: σύστημα (991e). The synoptic bond of the studies.
Recognition of the bond — διανοεῖσθαι (dianoeisthai)
διανοεῖσθαι (dianoeisthai)
Recognition of the bond. The natural connection is disclosed to those thinking through the studies, not automatically to anyone who memorizes their separate contents. Attested: διανοουμένοις (992a). The synoptic bond of the studies.
Learning while looking toward one (contextual phrase)
ὀρθῶς τις εἰς ἓν βλέπων μανθάνῃ (991e)
The participial qualification makes a unifying orientation part of right learning. It requires perceiving the natural relations among differentiated subjects, not merely pronouncing that everything is one. The synoptic bond of the studies.
One bond by nature (contextual phrase)
δεσμὸς γὰρ πεφυκὼς πάντων τούτων εἷς (991e–992a2)
The unity is presented as a natural bond of all the preceding studies. The claim rules out a purely arbitrary collection of disciplines but does not identify the bond through a unique technical formula supplied in the sentence. The synoptic bond of the studies.
