Meaning

The recipe sign and the planetary-alchemical characters perform different textual jobs. The recipe sign stands for the directions the Via condemns as false; Mercury, Sun and Moon signs compress names that its argument either interprets or disputes. Their mere presence is not proof that the passage recommends the operations or substances a modern reader associates with them.

The exact forms matter. In Way of Truth · unit 7 the Mercury character carries differing letter endings, retained here as distinct printed strings. Those endings belong to the historical writing, and normalizing all three Mercury forms to one bare sign would erase a real retrieval distinction. It would also obscure how symbolic characters participate in ordinary learned inflection.

Use in the book

Way of Truth · unit 2 addresses the friend and brother who has trusted deceptive alchemical books. It says that true art is never described without parables, while false directions and recipes are plentiful. The recipe sign appears in that accusation. The passage does not offer a new approved recipe under the sign; its function is to identify a misleading textual genre and the ruin of readers who pursue it without understanding Nature.

Way of Truth · unit 7 uses the inflected Mercury signs while explaining 'our mercury' as moisture beginning to join fire. The speaker accuses the ancients of obscuring one substance through many names. This explanatory setting matters more than an isolated sign-to-substance key.

Way of Truth · unit 28 prints the bare Mercury character in a negated proposition: the addressee should not believe that mercury and sulphur are the first matter of metals. The Via instead says the names were assigned to elemental liquor and fire. A search result stripped of its negation could therefore reverse the author's meaning.

Way of Truth · unit 30 uses Sun and Moon signs for the two noble metals perfected through coction. The paragraph explains reddening as making complete, not simply as producing a red colour. These signs thus anchor an example within the Via's theory. They do not settle every solar or lunar use elsewhere in the collected book.

Translation

The English renders the recipe signs as 'recipes' and the planetary characters as readable mercury, Sol and Luna. This improves continuous reading but makes an exact-form index necessary for readers consulting the historical text. The present record retains the actual characters and attached endings without converting them into modern formulae, supplying an unproved cipher, or silently treating a condemned recipe as an endorsed one.
