Meaning
Mercury is one of the volume's most unstable retrieval names. It can name ordinary quicksilver, the philosophers' special subject or water, a generative or nourishing metallic source, a name assigned to elemental liquor, and a Christological double being. These uses are connected by historical analogy and polemic, not by a proven identity with the modern element in every passage.
The double or twofold Mercury needs particular care. The earthly stone receives that title in the main treatise; the heavenly application explicitly interprets it through Christ as God and man. The Latin designation of a champion of two substances is explained by the adjacent hymn-line. It is not a claim that Christ comprises two chemical kinds of mercury.
Use in the book
Part II: matter and the work · unit 4 calls the subject double Mercury and azoth within a cluster of stone, gum, non-wetting water, spark and heavenly spirit. Part II: matter and the work · unit 7 sets mercury beside salt and sulphur in its three-in-one riddle. Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 16 then includes living, life-giving double Mercury among the stone's titles, and Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 17 transfers the language to the eternal Son, whose twofoldness is explicitly divine and human.
Nature's Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 1 rejects common volatile quicksilver as the material from which she makes a metal. Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 11 locates her treasure between Mercury and metal. In Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 18 the alchemist recounts, then repudiates, a sophist's advice to mix raw quicksilver with gold and separate their elements. Reported advice is not Nature's approved instruction; the reversal of the learner's judgment governs the entire unit.
The Summary makes Mercury a maternal, nourishing medium: Philosophical Summary · unit 5 says that metal still in its ore is still a Mercury. Its subsequent philosophical Mercury is said to be stronger than natural Mercury, while Philosophical Summary · unit 9 expressly rejects merely combining common gold, silver and mercury. The botanical and mountain imagery that follows does not provide a securely recoverable modern identity.
The Via offers another interpretation. Way of Truth · unit 7 calls moisture beginning to unite with fire 'our mercury'; Way of Truth · unit 28 denies that familiar mercury and sulphur are first matter and says the names conceal liquor and elemental fire. Way of Truth · unit 34 dismisses distraction by the name living silver and returns to inseparable liquor and fire. These are the Via's criticisms and definitions, not a universal decoding that cancels the Summary's or Nature's distinct formulations.

Translation
The aligned English distinguishes quicksilver from retained Mercury according to context, but typography alone cannot decide the sense. The historical signs with inflected endings in the Via remain separately retrievable rather than being normalized away. In the hymn comparison, 'God by nature and man' supplies a source-based explanation of twofoldness. Keeping that explicit gloss beside 'two substances' prevents the learned phrase from being misconstrued as either two divine persons or a laboratory composition.
