The main treatise treats numerous names as a problem of recognition and as a resource for theological comparison. Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 15 introduces parallel abundance: the earthly water-stone has many philosophical names, and the one divinity and light has many scriptural titles. Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 16 lists the material titles and gathers them under the perfect number thousand; Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 17 applies such names to God and the Son in a higher degree. This does not mean that every listed expression is a literal synonym or an independently identified ingredient. The English preserves the transition and hierarchy, so the plurality of names serves comparison rather than multiplying the beings named.
