The three principles are to produce two, male and female, which then produce one incorruptible thing. Elsewhere sulphur occupies the male position and mercury the female. These are relational and generative designations within the author’s art, not evidence that every male or female figure has one immutable material identity. The later statement that the female bore the male deliberately complicates the relation.
