Meaning
Mercurial water, mercury of the sun and ‘their mercury’ are names given to the subject after the preliminary work. The terms describe a prepared philosophical subject, not simply ordinary mercury dispersed in ordinary water. The solar qualification is consequential: the name is attached to the specific account of extracted inward powers and reunion with their own salt.
The later phrase aqua Mercurii is identified with the fire of wisdom. The apparent crossing of water and fire vocabularies is deliberate. This fire is called essential or supernatural and explicitly distinguished from material or elemental fire, while common fire has an assisting role. Erasing those qualifications would change the author’s theory.
Use in the book
Part II: matter and the work · unit 14 describes a transition from a rough, heavy and unfriendly appearance to a subtler, more penetrating subject. It also makes visible and invisible successive states in the explanation. Those attractive qualities do not mark the finished medicine. The same paragraph insists that, in this condition and without further preparation, the subject is of little medicinal help and instead a harmful poison. Its preliminary status is therefore as important as its learned names.
Part II: matter and the work · unit 20 assigns mercurial water agency within the subsequent work: common fire and art stir it into action, while the work is said to proceed by itself except for tending. The distinction is between principal transforming power and supporting heat, not between total human activity and total inactivity. The passage’s destructive and separative language concerns the added solar body within its own account; it cannot be exported as a safe protocol.
In Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 25 the conjunction becomes a polemical comparison against disputants over the union of natures and communication of properties in Christ. The author claims that the material union could make the theological point almost tangible. This use does not identify the solar and mercurial partners as divine persons or independently demonstrate a doctrine. It shows why a careful account of their unity matters to the main allegory.

Translation
The German phrase is ‘der zweyer Wasser Mercurien vnnd Solis Wesen’; the English renders it ‘of the two waters, the mercurial water and the being of the sun’. The wording keeps a difference between the two partners rather than turning them into two identical liquids. In the preliminary passage, the translation also preserves the decisive ‘without further preparation’ and ‘harmful poison’. These are not marginal cautions to omit from a flattering summary of the subject’s qualities.
