English renderings
sacred company; revel-band

Meaning

Θίασος names a company gathered around shared sacred or celebratory activity. In this corpus its primary uses occur in the hymn to Silenus. The local context makes a revel-band or sacred company more informative than an unspecified crowd, but the noun does not by itself prove the legal organization of a historical association.

Use in the book

Silenus is the leader of rites for a pastoral thiasos at LIV.4. The surrounding hymn places Naiads, ivy-bearing Bacchants, and beast-shaped Satyrs around him, so the company is imagined through named kinds of companion and through its divine leader. The genitive θιάσου belongs to his ritual leadership; it is not another epithet of Silenus’ body.

Near the close, he is asked to come with favourable bearing, crying the Bacchic cry and bringing calm among the thiasoi. The plural broadens the image from one company named in a title to companies receiving his presence. Excitement and calm need not be contradictory: the requested divine arrival can be enthusiastic without becoming harmful agitation. These two contexts show the word participating in a petition for a well-disposed gathering, not merely recording that a procession took place.

Translation

The apparatus reports θίασ’ εὐνομίου against the adopted θιάσου νομίου. Its division and construction are uncertain, so it should not be cited as an independent witness to exactly the printed “pastoral company.” The English “band” or “company” is descriptive, not a claim that the hymn supplies membership rules.
