Moving by night

Meaning

Themis is νυκτιπόλευτος at LXXIX.7, a nocturnal movement epithet before the hymn’s account of Bacchic nights. Although its formation resembles other -πόλευτος words, it should not be translated as a human mystery-office: night is the first element and the goddess is the referent.
