Meaning

Vulcan is the name given to the fire-agent helping the Artist’s lawful preparation on page 55. Elsewhere the fire-artist reads Nature’s material book through chymical work. The treatise also distinguishes an essential fire from elemental fire in describing certain metallic preparations. These are local technical and figurative uses, not one interchangeable substance called fire.

Use in the book

The page 55 passage presents the Stone as the outcome of resolution, sufficient purification and lawful composition with Vulcan’s help. Fire belongs within ordered artful assistance, while the matter, its internal composition and divine permission remain indispensable. The name does not supply a mythological episode or a particular furnace regime.

Page 69 employs a different distinction in the catalogue of laboratory products. Running corporeal mercuries are described as metals released from the bonds of their coagulation by a certain essential fire, so that they remain in flux without elemental fire. Khunrath is explaining how a product can have a flowing metallic appearance without ongoing ordinary heating. The surrounding argument nevertheless denies that such products are therefore pri-material. “Essential fire” must not be used to smuggle that denial away, nor identified with a modern reagent absent from the text.

Fire is also an instrument of inquiry. Pages 142–1432 describe a book of nearly three hundred natural letters whose reading requires a fire-artist. The precise collection is not itemized, but the contrast is clear: merely possessing learned books differs from knowing how to read material things chymically. Later, pages 152–15423 call for costly investigation of divine secrets in Nature by fire and direct that investigation toward wisdom and benefit rather than money alone. The page 154 margin calls fire God’s ordinary Professor of Physics in the University of the World, expounding Nature’s book: its pedagogical role is Khunrath’s explicit formulation.

Finally, page 171 attacks mere cooking, coal-burning and spoiled materials when natural grounding and reflection are absent. Fire-work therefore has no automatic authority. Its value comes from the question being asked, the matter employed and the understanding of what the work teaches.

Translation in this edition

“Vulcan” is kept as the author’s personifying name. “Essential” and “elemental” are not normalized into chemical categories: the passage names a distinction but does not identify its first term materially. The fiery catholic spark and the special formative sparks belong to the cosmological vocabulary and require their own contextual treatment.

Source note

The catalogue at page 69 is conceded as a description of possible preparations before its products are denied first-matter status on pages 70–712. Its fire terminology must be read inside that concession-and-refutation structure. The University-of-the-World margin adopts the authorial correction from Muudana to Mundana. The errata authorize the repaired word; the description of fire as professor is primary marginal text, not a modern metaphor.
