Historical definition

Vulcanii or Vulcanici are those who continually work about fire.

Meaning

The subject is people and their activity. Continually describes their characteristic occupation. The entry does not itself identify them as spirits dwelling within fire.

Use in the book

Vulcanus supplies the corresponding direct fire name. Salamandri, by contrast, are spirits or fiery men dwelling in fire. Preserving the verbs, working about and dwelling in, prevents different kinds of beings and practitioners from being confused.
