The end of the chapter in 1802, where the Preface of 1805 has ‘etc., etc.’.

… It is the life of that young René to whom Chactas told his story. It is, so to speak, only a thought; it is the painting of the vague of the passions, with no admixture of adventures, save one misfortune, which, without producing remarkable events, serves only to redouble René’s melancholy and to punish him. One will find in this episode, besides, some harmonies of Christian monuments and of the religious life with the passions of the heart and the pictures of nature: thus our aim will be doubly fulfilled.
