Meaning
The thread-soul is an image of one continuing wisdom within changing religious embodiments. Forms are arranged as items joined by a persistent inward principle.
Use in the book
The expression introduces the Underlying Principle subsection. The following paragraphs describe old orders perishing, new forms appearing, and a spiritual sun illuminating successive groupings. The metaphor therefore supplies conceptual continuity where outward histories show change.

In this edition
The hyphenated thread-soul is retained. Ordinary thread references, including ritual cords, are not all examples of this metaphor.
Reading the argument
The image is strongest as an explanation of how the author thinks diversity can remain related. It does not itself provide the records needed to identify each historical link. The reader should separate the organizing metaphor from evidence for the organizations arranged upon it.
