Meaning
John the Baptist and John the Evangelist are distinct figures whose names support several strands of the book’s Masonic and Christian interpretation.
Use in the book
The alleged Cologne record invokes the Baptist as an example for brethren. The later apostolic succession narrative uses the beloved disciple and Evangelist. The two parallel lines are associated with the saints and their symbolic places in the year. These uses join institutional names, religious authority, and emblematic explanation, but they should not be merged into one biography or one succession claim.

In this edition
The source’s pairing varies: M.72 distinguishes Evangelist and Seer of Patmos, while the later discussion names Baptist and Evangelist. Those formulations are retained and distinguished rather than silently reconciled.
