Meaning

Opening and closing can describe access, dissolution, enclosure or interruption of a prepared work. Touching, adding and taking away enter the same family because Nature's dialogue explicitly groups them as interventions no longer required after proper preparation. These are associated actions, not synonyms. The object and stage determine whether opening is promised, necessary, forbidden or criticised.

An opening in the heart toward a fortunate entrance is not the same as opening a vessel. Likewise, the claim that gold must be opened into quicksilver occurs as an assertion rejected by the dialogue's alchemist, not as his settled instruction.

Use in the book

Part I: entrance and preparation · unit 3 describes divine response to an upright purpose as an opening toward the beginning of the art. The Spirit leads through means, and the person recognises the opened entrance inwardly. In the material riddles, Part II: matter and the work · unit 8 links dissolution in the middle with closing in the third, while Part II: matter and the work · unit 31 compresses the art into finding three in one, then opening and closing again. Their brevity does not provide a complete account of apparatus or duration.

In Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 16 the alchemist compares the prepared subject with seed enclosed in a female vessel. Once enclosed, it needs no further adding, removing, opening, closing or touching because what is required is within. Yet he also describes prior human preparation and the continued assistance of warmth. The negation concerns further handling at that stage, not the absence of all human work from the outset.

Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 17 rejects opening ordinary gold to obtain what is not already there. Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 20 similarly denies the need to add anything new when body and spirit are being made one, and attacks real separation of the four elements. These claims belong to the learner's evolving exposition of Nature's teaching. They should not be silently combined with every opening-riddle into a single perfectly harmonized rule.

The Summary's Philosophical Summary · unit 10 uses turning eggs, avoiding washing and attending a nest as its own analogy of simple practice. Those household actions help explain its image, but do not replace the dialogue's specific restrictions or authorize additional ingredients.

Translation

The English differentiates the spiritual 'opened ... entrance' from technical opening and from the rejected proposal to open gold. In Nature's list it retains 'touching', a seemingly minor word that makes the restriction broader than merely avoiding additives. Its placement after preparation and beside continuing heat is essential. The family therefore indexes Touching and Adding separately without pretending they are meanings of one historical verb.
