Meaning

Manual work is the practical undertaking that follows preparation of the person and recognition of the matter. Handgrips are skilled practical measures or ways of handling the work, not necessarily literal grips of the fingers. The adjective golden can commend an especially valuable instruction; it does not prove that each instruction is a separate technique for making gold.

The vocabulary crosses the material and interpretive design of the treatise. Practical knowledge belongs to experienced workers, yet the announced spiritual allegory also promises the appropriate golden instructions. This overlap is deliberate: the book represents the right conduct of the person and the right conduct of the work as mutually illuminating.

Use in the book

Opening explanation · unit 10 states the four-part plan. Personal preparation comes first, matter and preparation second, benefit third, and spiritual allegory fourth. The promise of golden practical instructions appears in the description of the final part. It therefore cannot be restricted to the more visibly technical passages in Part Two. The author also values brevity and simplicity over decorative elaboration, indicating the mode in which the instruction will be given.

Part I: entrance and preparation · unit 8 permits a beginning in manual labour only after due consideration and knowledge of true first matter. The worker sows, plants and waters, but God gives the increase. Calling the work manual neither makes it self-sufficient nor renders it unnecessary. The human role is active but instrumental, and prayer for guidance accompanies the beginning.

Part II: matter and the work · unit 25 locates skilful handgrips in the correction of a damaged compound. Errors may be remedied if they have not become dominant and help comes in time, but the task requires diligence, orderly means and an experienced artist's knowledge. The author offers only a brief indication for beginners. This is not an assertion that every stage is easy for an untrained person, and it should not be combined with later claims of slight labour to erase the demands of preliminary or corrective work.

Translation

The translation varies 'manual labour', 'skilful practical measures' and 'golden practical instructions' to reflect the actual contexts. That variation clarifies rather than fragments the family: one expression names undertaking, another know-how, and another the promised value of instruction. The qualification about defects not having gained the upper hand is retained in the corrective passage, so the practical skill is not represented as an unlimited power to reverse any failure.
