Meaning
The family includes named metals, metals described as base or inferior, and words for metallic character or kind. Metalheit is what constitutes metallicity, not the name of another metal. Metallische Natur, Art and Wesen direct attention to a nature or mode of being, which the Via repeatedly distinguishes from the visible metallic bodies workers mishandle.
The main verse’s list includes tin, steel and copper, with gold and silver as desired products. The later tincture account groups recipients by imperfection and relative suitability. These categories express the book’s evaluative and theoretical scheme rather than a modern periodic classification.
Use in the book
Part III: benefits and their rank · unit 11 makes reception depend on relationship to the matter and purity: more closely related and purer recipients are said to receive the tincture more readily. ‘Base and inferior’ is consequently not a sufficient explanation of how all recipients behave. The passage also distinguishes rejected impurity from the accepted metal, a distinction important to its account of multiplication.
Nature’s Demonstration speaks in terms of formation. Nature takes matter from the elements, grants metallic power and brings forth pure or impure, hard or soft metals. The sulphur and quicksilver in this account are expressly not simply the ones the practitioner sees. Metallicity is a power and ordered formation attributed to Nature, not merely a visible surface resembling a metal.
The Via makes understanding metallic Nature necessary before correct experience is possible. Its discussion of smoke and coction explains why the reader must know what metallicity is. Yet it also warns that the true metallic essence should not therefore be extracted from ordinary perfect or imperfect metals: such attempts destroy or corrupt the essence and liquor. The narrator’s approval of metallic essence as matter and rejection of taking it out of metals must both be retained. They are the very distinction his polemic says the uninformed reader misses.

Translation
The English ‘metallic character’ for Metalheit, ‘metallic Nature’ and ‘metallic kind’ help separate related but non-identical terms. In Way of Truth · unit 32 ‘removed from metallic being’ is stronger than merely ‘made less pure’. Conversely, ‘base and inferior metals’ in the main text concerns recipients of a tincture, not necessarily the Via’s definition of first matter. A combined lexicon should enable those comparisons without forcing the companion theories into a single substance-list.
