Affinity is a graded relation of suitability, not an assertion that every metal is identical. In Part II: matter and the work · unit 15 the body of gold is described as closest to and most acceptable to first matter when a later fermentation is introduced. In Part III: benefits and their rank · unit 11, closeness of relation and purity govern how readily metals are received and how productive multiplication is said to become; unsuitable material is cast off as slag. The English 'related' and 'acceptable' preserves two different aspects, kinship and receptivity. These claims belong to particular stages of the treatise's work. They do not erase its earlier exclusion of foreign additions or establish a modern chemical compatibility scale.
