Meaning

Gradation means progression in degree, but degree has more than one local use. The main treatise’s gradirung concerns improving imperfect metals and defective precious stones. In the Nature dialogue, four gradus distinguish kinds of created being. In the Via, graduirung is the natural elevation of elemental essence towards perfection. These uses share the language of ordered difference without forming a single numerical scale.

The Via’s phrase about departing from one’s degree gives the term a negative counterpart. A foreign admixture does not simply lower a score; the narrator says it removes the liquor from metallic being and places it in a sophistical order. Degree therefore involves the integrity of a kind as well as relative completeness.

Use in the book

Part III: benefits and their rank · unit 12 accepts high gradation and transmutation among the art’s impressive benefits, then calls such material achievements its lowest part when compared with knowledge of heavenly things. ‘High’ describes the material change, while ‘lowest’ evaluates its place among benefits. The words are not contradictory because their comparisons differ.

The alchemist’s reply to Nature sets out being, growth, sensation and the human degree in an ascending account of creation. Stones and metals occupy the first level; the human being includes the lower degrees but receives the rational soul from God beyond Nature’s power. This is not a procedure for promoting a metal into an animal or a person.

The Via claims that one substance rises through natural coction, and calls that elevation alone true alchemy. Corporeal fire and water are aids to elemental essences, not equivalent names for those invisible essences. Its later warning preserves the boundary of the metallic kind: attempts to extract essence destructively or mix it with alien moisture corrupt what was sought. The affirmative ascent and the negative departure belong together. They articulate the narrator’s standard of natural improvement, not a licence to assemble stages from other texts into a new method.

Translation

The aligned English uses ‘brought to a high degree’, ‘four degrees’ and ‘elevation through the degrees’ for these distinct contexts. In Way of Truth · unit 32 it retains both ‘departed from its degree’ and ‘removed from metallic being’. Reading the latter as a simple reduction in purity would lose the stronger claim. The Latin-looking inflections are preserved as selected historical forms, while the headword serves as a comparative access label rather than a purported single attested German lemma.
