Meaning

Zerschmeltzen means melt or dissolve through melting; gebohren means born. Their combination gives the short sentence two movements: the dissolution of the four elements and the generation of a new heaven and earth. ‘All four’ is explicit. The line does not describe only one metal melting in an ordinary furnace.

The vocabulary is cosmological and generative at once. The new heaven and earth are not identified as renamed laboratory vessels, and no temperature, material quantity or operational sequence is provided. Its brevity is part of the response’s enigmatic mode, not a gap that the lexicon should fill with an invented procedure.

Use in the book

The distinct Second Response of 1661 leads into this sentence through night’s passing, the sun’s shining and the approach of the Lord’s days. Heaven becomes fire and sets the world alight. The next unit then declares the melting and new birth. This order links an image of cosmic conflagration with renewal; it does not end with mere destruction.

Immediately afterwards, the writer says that the treasure of the world is contained in these few words and will fulfil the recipient’s desire. The renewal sentence therefore carries more than descriptive spectacle: it belongs to the response’s claim of compressed disclosure. Its meaning remains allusive. It should not be assigned without evidence to the anonymous 1619 main author or treated as a final stage added to that author’s process.

Translation

The English retains ‘melt’ and ‘are born’ as different verbs rather than paraphrasing both as transformation. Note n238 relates the wording to 2 Peter 3 and Revelation 21 and observes its combination with the preceding alchemical transformations. That is a useful editorial identification of scriptural resonance, not an additional historical lemma or a solved code. The source’s succinct claim remains the limit of what can be asserted here.
