Meaning
The elements belong to a historical account of natural constitution and qualities, not the modern periodic table. Fire, air, water and earth are distinguished through properties and relations of action and reception. Yet the collection also distinguishes visible corporeal aids from invisible elemental essences, and a fifth essence from the four. The English word “element” cannot make those levels interchangeable.
Qualities likewise name relational capacities such as hot, cold, moist and dry, not independent ingredients to be isolated at will. Nature distinguishes what belongs properly to an element from what it receives by appropriation from another. This is one companion’s explanation and must not be silently simplified into a universal four-square chart.
Use in the book
The main treatise describes the first matter as a fitting balance of all elements, resistant to their attacks and comparable to heaven above the four elements and qualities. Its earlier devotional argument says that heaven, earth and the elements assist God’s friend, while God alone gives increase. Neither statement makes the human artist an autonomous creator.
Nature’s account begins metallic generation from elemental mixture and gives each element active and receptive relations. She also describes a hierarchy of first matter, heavens and elements, with differing shares of the fifth being. The Alchemist later insists that the elements within quicksilver and the solar body are inseparably united by means he cannot reproduce. Pretended extraction of visible elemental portions is his target; God and Nature retain a power he denies to ordinary human art.
Via offers a different explanatory distinction. Corporeal fire and water assist elemental essences, while the philosophical names Sun, Moon, soul and spirit can designate invisible fire and moisture. The mistake, for Via, is reading these names as instructions to dissolve metallic bodies. Its claim that ordinary mercury and sulphur are not the first matter of metals must remain attributed to this narrator. These texts share vocabulary and polemical concerns without supplying one perfectly harmonized theory.

Translation
The aligned English retains the learned distinctions “properly” and “by appropriation” in Nature’s elemental discussion. In Via it distinguishes “corporeal” from “elemental,” a distinction easily lost if every occurrence of fire or water is read as the same physical stuff. Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 19’s statement that fire is invisible concerns the elemental referent in that argument; the translation should not be read as denying the ordinary visibility of flame everywhere in the volume.
