Meaning

The dialogue distinguishes being, living growth and sensation rather than treating everything that exists as alive in the same way. Nature assigns metals and stones being alone, plants living and growth, and animals sensation beyond growth. Esse and vivere are learned Latin terms embedded in the German exposition; the German words for existence and growth explain them. Sensation is a further capacity, not simply another name for change.

These distinctions regulate generative language. Something can originate from elements without possessing the nourishing and reproductive powers of a plant or animal. Consequently, words such as grain and seed require their immediate context: their appearance cannot by itself establish that metallic bodies breed their own kind.

Use in the book

Nature opens Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 2 with a growing grain embracing several natural domains, but then emphatically denies metals life, nourishment for growth, and generative seed. That apparent tension belongs to the passage itself. It should be retained as a distinction needing attentive reading, not repaired by silently deleting either statement. Metallic constitution and purification are discussed without conceding plant-like propagation.

The Alchemist’s answer extends the hierarchy to four degrees. Humans fulfill the preceding degrees, but the immortal rational soul comes from God beyond Nature’s power. He explicitly denies that Nature gives this highest human perfection, although she forms the bodily vessel. Grace is consequently not reducible to bodily constitution.

In Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 17 the Alchemist applies the distinction polemically to gold: its being is dead, it has no generative grain and it does not grow larger with the years. The maxim that everything begets its like is restricted to plants and sentient creatures. The separate Summary also calls common gold, silver and mercury dead, but develops the positive alternative through fruit still nourished on a tree. Its vocabulary of growth is not automatically Nature’s account of metallic being.

Translation

“Being” and “existence” render Esse and Wesen together, whereas “living and growth” preserves the paired capacities assigned to plants. The English “no generative seed” is crucially narrower than denying every possible figurative use of seed. In the Alchemist’s later speech, the translation retains “death is its being or existence,” a deliberately forceful assertion; softening it to “temporarily inactive” would insert a doctrine absent from this local argument.
